Menopause

Chicory

This stage in life is unique to humans; no other animals go through it. The average length of menopausal transition is just over a year but it can last for several years. Some women are surprised by an erratic return of the menstrual cycle when they change their diet, fall in love or start taking herbs.

Menopause causes hot flushes with the sensation of heat spreading from the waist or chest towards the neck, face and upper arms. The skin becomes red and warm for a few minutes with a chill following. Some women experience very uncomfortable night sweats and change their night clothes several times. Hot flushes occur as the body adapts to decreased oestrogen levels.

Recommendations

Supplements:

  • vitamin C and bioflavanoids reduce severity of hot flushes and increase bioavailability of oestrogens in the body.
  •  Evening Primrose oil.
  • Sage drops before bed – see products page.

Self care

Use cotton nightwear, sleep on a towel or folded sheet, throwing it out of the bed when it becomes wet.
Sleep deprivation is believed to be a cause of peri-menopausal depression. Flushes disrupt sleep and dreaming patterns. When oestrogen levels are increased, sleep patterns return to normal.
Do not have a hot bath before bed. Wash your feet in cool water before bed.
Do not drink alcohol in the evening or eat anything sugary. A rich meal including beef or lamb can cause an uncomfortable night.
Drink plenty of water during the day.
